At A Wto Rally
E Rocco Caldwell

Reality is a joke, keep that in mind.

Purple sandstone sky inking down to a flat line at the edge of the earth, a bird flies by rushing for her morning coffee or newspaper. God lights the sky on fire and it burns orange and red eating up the violet and black. I think of uncle Toms handing out conservative literature on the corner of Pike and 4th. This is before the big rally of course. They work hard to be accepted not realizing they never will. I work my way to the coffee shop looking up to see if the bird made it before me. There are all sorts of birds pecking the wet grass near the concrete sidewalk. The lovely girls dressed in black knit: berets, turtlenecks, culottes and knee-high socks carrying college books pass and I smile. There's a chill in the morning air and the approach of rain. I notice the junkie panhandling for his morning fix and the drunk still asleep inside the doorway of an abandoned building. A few leaves walk across the grass in front of me. I think, "Man, Capitalism is a great thing to have," and shrug my shoulders at the invisible man that watches us all. The coffee taste like the lips of the first girl I ever kissed underneath an overpass maybe five years ago. Her lips were as big as a floatation device at least that was what my memory of her recalls.
I miss the dimes scattered over a section of Gasworks Park but the elderly reminds me it happens everyday in this wonderful country. The early bird catches a cold and all the jazz. I will get up earlier next time to get my dimes I assure myself but I know I won't. I sip my coffee and stare up at the office buildings and the storms brewing in each one. Every other window is boarded up because of the people who take headers out at the rise or fall of the stock market. The city did its part by placing BEWARE OF FALLING DREAMS signs below each building. That was nice of the city, pure socialism at it best. The WTO is meeting here today and that has attracted people from all over the world. They are amassing just outside of the building the World Trade Organization is meeting. There's a lot of trigger happy cops there stuffing their weapon with rubber bullets and lighting the ends of teargas canisters.
I will tell you about a few of these WTO protestors. There are the Lesbians against destroying the environment; beautiful women with short haircuts and no makeup. They have a glittering of righteousness in their eyes along with confusion. I think of how sexy they appear in their loose fitting clothes but they are determined to save the environment not to have sex. I haven't the heart to tell them they're too late. The environment was sold to the highest bidder back in 1948 at a place called Bretton Woods. The anarchists are next, a cache of young idealistic minds confused by the riches of their one time flower children parents. These anarchists like to blow things up and over turn cars. They break windows and toss fire bombs. The world is a dark place to all of them during the week but its skiing or surfing on the weekends. There are the socialists many are braless women who paint flowers on their cheeks. Everything is wrong with Capitalism including the opportunities they have to work good paying jobs and marry who they like. They attract me the most. It is why I am here so early in the morning holding a cup of coffee instead of a remote control. Today there are thousands of people amassing to stop corporate greed. The labor unions are going to hold a rally at the stadium later on in the day.
All hell broke loose before I could finish that cup of java. It began in the streaks of teargas canisters against the pavement and the roar of protest like a tidal wave. The sounds of breaking glass and rocks hitting helmets following sirens and loudspeakers; the cacophony of helicopters' blades thumping overhead pulling the teargas up into the very morning sky. There is a wall of police holding shields high and clubs moving up the street. Protestors seem to be sucked beneath their storm trooper black boots. The protestors resist tossing rocks, brick and sticks I can see lines of spit from their mouths. Flesh against steel even I know the result of such a contest but they don't seem to care. Suddenly the moving line is only a few yards from me and a rod strikes me to the head. I crumple to the sidewalk with warm blood flowing from a wound the size of my mouth. Someone pulls me from the fray into the safety of a building. It is a businessman I can tell by the suit and tie. He is administering aid to my gaping wound. I can only mouth why.
