Train Tracks
Hayley Burdett

When I was a young girl, I used to skip down to the train tracks. My heart not missing a beat, keeping in tune to the patter of my saddle oxfords on the concrete. I would just sit, listening to the faint whistling of the wind, the breeze rushing into my face. You could see the stars so well over there.
Now, Iím sitting at these train tracks, harsh metal grinding into the soil. My heart beats faster in my adulthood, so my shoes canít keep the melody going. Nothing looks the same to my aging eyes. Graffiti has littered the angry asphalt. Fierce pink lettering and yellow tales of hate.
I turn my head back to drink from the little dipper, but itís much too cloudy and I canít see a thing.
