A&P
Winson Thai

It was very warm last Thursday afternoon. That is why two of my friends, Andrea and Laura, and I had no problem wearing just our bathing suits when we went into an A&P at Central Street in the middle of town to purchase a jar of herring snacks that my mom had asked me to buy earlier that day. There were not a lot of people in that store, which was five miles from the nearest beach, and only two cash registers, both manned by male cashiers, were open. One of them was in the middle of a transaction with an elderly woman who seemed to have been at the store many times in this past, but despised the service it provides.

Andrea, Laura, and I happily talked and laughed as we walked up one aisle searching for what we came for, but could not find it, so we circled around the bread shelves and walked down the adjacent aisle still talking to each other. We stopped at the front of the store by the registers, distracted by what we were talking about. I noticed that the younger cashier, the one who was with the old woman before, was staring at us with a small smile on his face. He must have enjoyed seeing us in his store wearing only our bathing suits, something not quite common in society. We had no time to flirt with him, however, because we lost track of time and realized we needed to find that herring jar and get out of the store as quickly as possible.

The three of us began moving again and went up the third aisle from the left, passing by a middle-aged lady with a shopping cart who was too busy searching for whatever she wanted to get to notice us. A couple of teenage boys, however, did see us and were probably checking us out as they walked behind us. Laura took a bag of cookies from the shelf, but put it back after examining the contents label. Andrea and I also looked at the shelves to see what we could buy the next time we come here. We were still laughing and talking when we reached the back of the store. Not having found what we were looking for, we asked the person behind the meat counter, who according to his apron was named McMahon, where we can find the herring snacks. Not seemingly caring about the way we were dressed, he replied nicely that they were in Aisle One, which was all the way at the left-hand end of the store. When we got there, we walked down the aisle searching for the jar. We found it eventually, but to our surprise, it was the only one on the shelf.

We reached the front of the aisle and walked past the four unopened registers. While I did not like the way the younger cashier was admiring us earlier, I chose to go to him since the older one did not look too friendly. I saw that his apron read “Sammy” as I put the jar down on the register. As Sammy placed it in his hand, he must have wondered where the cash was going to come since I did not carry a pocketbook or purse. I took out a dollar bill from inside my top, which seemed to surprise him. Before we could begin our transaction, however, an old man came to the register from a room close by and stood behind Sammy.

His shirt had a nametag that read “Manager,” which made me feel uneasy as I did not know what he was going to do. He rigidly told us that his store was not the beach. Blushing, I replied that my mother had asked me to pick up a jar of herring snacks. For some reason, Sammy utterly froze in disbelief when I said that. He stood still for the next three minutes, apparently daydreaming about something. His manager snapped him out of it before telling us that this was okay, but his store was still not the beach. Andrea told him we just came for this one jar, which was true, but he said it did not make any difference at all and that he wanted us “decently dressed” when we come to his store. This annoyed me and my friends and I could tell Sammy was starting to feel the same way. I told the manager that we were “decent,” but he replied his rules required us to “have our shoulders covered” the next time we come or our business will be declined. During all of this, some customers were transacting with the other cashier, who did not look happy either.

After Sammy rung up my purchase and his cash register opened, I tentatively gave my bill to him. He unfolded it and put it in the register before placing a half-dollar coin and penny into my hand. Then he placed our jar inside a brown paper bag, twisted it, and handed it to me. Being incredibly angry over what just happened, Andrea, Laura, and I walked out of the store in a hurry, but while going through the doors, I thought I heard someone said “I quit” or something like that. Because it was getting late and we were in a foul mood, however, we did not stay to watch what was going on. Instead, we went to our car across the street with me at the wheel, Andrea on the passenger seat, and Laura in the back. Though I was curious to see what Sammy was doing after we left, we quickly drove off, swearing never to shop at this A&P again.
