When The Bells Began To Ring
Kennedy O Obohwemu

The world was at it's feet,
History was to unfold;
Still vacant was the seat,
A holy post to hold;

We'd been waiting for long,
It wasn't the first time;
The emotions were strong,
Who'd be the next in line?

Up to twenty six years,
It was happening again;
We awaited the cheers,
The journey's not in vain;

We watched out for the smoke,
Gazing at the chimney;
We knew it was no joke,
It was our only duty;

It was coming out black,
None had been chosen yet;
We all had to sit back,
There's no reason to fret;

It began to turn grey,
Or something close to white;
It was coming our way,
It filled our hearts with delight;

The bells began to ring,
The flags were in the air;
We all began to sing,
We needn't shed a tear.
