Why To Say No To G.M.O.: Get Genetic Engineering Out Of This Country

Preface
Growing up in the early nineties and on to the twentieth century, I’ve been exposed with much more than I’ve ever imagined. Questionable vaccines, increased pollution from both electromagnetic sources, and automobiles, and a seemingly helpless failing economy are just to name a few. Relating to these controversial issues, I should include the whole process of genetic engineering of the food supply. In this documentary, I’ll list valid and informative reasons for questioning and lessoning the use of genetic engineering of our foods. Hopefully you’ll find this information invaluable and use it as a support to turn the tables on genetic engineering.

Part 1: You Are What You Eat
From corn chips and bread, to additives in meat products. Taking a trip to the average supermarket unfortunately opens up an uncertain world of genetic engineering to many un-informed consumers. President, Barack Obama, along with others in his elitist group have shown thorough support in turning organic and natural foods to biological battlefields. One of Mr. Obama’s actions was appointing the Chief Executive of Monsanto, Michael Taylor to be the head of the F.D.A.. Monsanto is the largest corporation using biotechnology, with a powerful grasp on ninety percent of genetically engineered foods in the U.S. (1). Time and again, these foods have shown to be more harm than good. Monsanto along with its other biotech partners have bought up farmland once owned by American families. Obviously no family farm can compete with these giants, and the former is often left without support. Corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, potatoes, tomatoes, canola oil, and cotton are all on the ever-growing list of genetically engineered crops. According to reporters for ‘Coast to Coast’ radio, and author and researcher Jeffery Smith, when humans ate genetically modified soy, it changed the natural bacteria in their gut to g.m.o.. Also, ‘Coast to Coast’ reported, Monsanto forced Indian farmers to use their g.m. rice, and the farmers reported that their cattle died when they were given the rice. This was mysterious, so scientists opened up the bodies of the animals. They found un-natural changes in the organs of the animal’s bodies that normally wouldn’t occur. An equally disturbing report revealed forty seven dead, and hundreds more injured from a genetically engineered lycopene supplement in Japan (2). The producers claim a “manufacturing error”, but they cannot take back the damage that was done. Genetic engineering has also taken place in pharmaceutical medications, and conventional vaccines, with great support. Canadian corporation, Medicago, which makes protein-based vaccines from genetically engineered plants including tobacco, received a C$16 million investment from tobacco giant Phillip Morris Inc in 2008 (3). The technology is seeping under the foundation of honest science and research. Like most questionable corporations, Monsanto’s research defending its technology is usually funded by Monsanto itself, or other companions. With only about one percent of the world’s farming devoted towards organic practices, it may seem hopeless. However I refuse to give up hope. If genetic engineering can be eliminated from Europe, than it could certainly be eliminated here. Most nations in the world are opposed to genetic engineering (4). We have groups such as Green Peace, and Organic Consumers Association which are seek ways to eliminate genetic engineering in the United States. Once a tipping point is reached, there will be no excess support for the biotech giants. I, along with millions of others would love to see genetic engineering to become a thing of the past.

Part 2: How Much Power Do They Really Have?
The four corporations in control of the genetically engineered crops United States are Monsanto, Dupont, Syngenta, and Dow chemical company (5). Their listed respectively in terms of power. Ninety percent of soybeans, seventy percent of corn, and seventy percent of cotton grown in the United States is genetically engineered (6). The majority of processed foods in a supermarket are likely to contain genetically engineered ingredients. With these statistics, the power and control of the biotechnology companies is displayed behind glass walls. They don’t want consumers concerned that their food is different from other food, so genetically engineered ingredients are not required to be labeled. For example, modified cornstarch may appear on some ingredient lists as such, but other companies may just list it as cornstarch. Since the nineteen eighties, Monsanto has be come the worlds leader in genetically modified seeds, and has won 674 biotechnology patents, more than any other company according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (7). The company’s first product was the artificial sweetener saccharin in 1920 (8). Following the second world war, the company became involved with highly toxic chemicals such as Agent Orange, DDT, and the chemical herbicide Lasso (9). From toxic chemicals to toxic food, Monsanto and its biotech partners have an increased grasp on unlimited power. Unfortunately, they have also shown to be corrupt in their practices towards other humans. Farmers who buy Monsanto’s patented Roundup Ready seeds are required to sign an agreement promising not to save the seed produced after each harvest for re-planting, or to sell the seed to other farmers. This means that farmers must buy new seed every year. Those increased sales, coupled with ballooning sales of its Roundup weed killer, have been a bonanza for Monsanto (10). They do not seem to be tolerant towards protestors as well. In Iraq, CIA militia group “Blackwater” has been hired by various alliances to silence any protestors of biotechnology, and peace protestors for animal rights (11). Monsanto claims that they did not hire Blackwater, but they’ve also told numerous lies to the public, and should be held more accountable as corporation which needs to get its act together.

Part 3: You Have More Power Than You Think
I strongly believe in supporting individual’s freedoms and rights. Biotech companies seem to have unchecked power, but they can be stopped in their tracks. When protestors gathered together in Europe against genetic engineering, corporations decided to stop using it. The same can be done here. Jeffery Smith, who is the author of Genetic Roulette, and Seeds of Deception, believes that a tipping point has to be reached when enough consumers boycott G.E. food. Once this happens, corporations like Kraft foods, and Kellogg’s will understand that they have to change their ways. The Organic Consumer’s Association, The Green Peace foundation, and The Union of Concerned Scientists all offer hope for consumers who are uncertain about how to take positive action. Contact your senators and let them know that you want to see genetically engineered ingredients labeled. Most importantly, vote with your dollar. Many consumers already by organic produce at least occasionally, and buying produce labeled as (USDA ORGANIC) ensures that the product is free of genetically engineered ingredients. Starting at a grassroots level can do a lot towards making positive change. It comes down to how much the average consumer will tolerate. If you don’t see any reason for changing your ways, than neither do the corporations. Let them become aware of your rights, and the power that you really have.
